Two Boom Lift Types, Two Different Jobs

Boom lifts (also called manlifts or cherry pickers) come in two main forms: telescopic and articulated. They look similar from a distance, but they solve different access problems — and renting the wrong one is one of the most common, and most expensive, mistakes on a UAE worksite. This guide explains the difference in plain terms so you can match the machine to the job before you book.

At Platform Access Equipment Rental LLC we stock both types from 16m to 26m, so we can advise honestly on which suits your site. If you already know your reach and obstacles, call +971 55 692 9829 for a quote. If you're not sure, read on.

What Is a Telescopic Boom Lift?

A telescopic boom lift — sometimes called a straight boom or stick boom — has a single boom that extends in a straight line, like a telescope. Because all of its length goes into reaching outward and upward, a telescopic boom delivers the greatest horizontal outreach and the highest straight-line reach of any boom lift in its class.

Telescopic booms are the right choice when:

  • The ground is open and clear — open construction sites, yards, and lay-down areas
  • You need maximum horizontal distance — reaching across a barrier, water, or an area the machine can't drive into
  • You're working at the top of the height range — facades, steel structures, and tall industrial work where straight-line reach matters most
  • Access is unobstructed — nothing stands between the machine and the work area

Our 16 meter and 22 meter units are telescopic diesel 4x4 machines built for exactly this kind of open-site, long-reach work.

What Is an Articulated Boom Lift?

An articulated boom lift — also called a knuckle boom — has multiple boom sections connected by joints (knuckles) that bend. Instead of only reaching in a straight line, it can fold and angle the platform up and over obstacles, then position it precisely where you need it. That flexibility is its whole purpose.

Articulated booms are the right choice when:

  • There's an obstacle in the way — a wall, parked vehicles, landscaping, or plant equipment between the machine and the work
  • You need "up and over" access — lifting the platform up, then out over a barrier to reach the far side
  • The work is around a structure — facade detailing, signage on building corners, or maintenance behind obstructions
  • Space is tight — the folding boom lets you tuck in and reposition where a straight boom simply can't fit

Our 20 meter and 26 meter units are articulated diesel 4x4 machines, ideal for obstructed access and detailed positioning at height.

Telescopic vs Articulated: Side-by-Side

  • Horizontal outreach: Telescopic wins — straight-line reach is its strength. Articulated trades outreach for flexibility.
  • Up-and-over access: Articulated wins — the knuckle joint reaches over obstacles a telescopic boom cannot.
  • Maximum working height: Comparable within a class; both our telescopic and articulated units span 16m–26m working height.
  • Best ground conditions: Telescopic prefers open, clear sites; articulated handles obstructed, congested sites.
  • Precise platform positioning: Articulated wins — more joints mean finer control over exactly where the basket sits.
  • Simplicity of operation: Telescopic is the more straightforward to position on open ground.

A Simple Way to Decide

Ask yourself one question: "Is there anything between my machine and the work?"

  • If the path is clear and you mainly need height and outreach → a telescopic boom lift is usually the most cost-effective choice.
  • If you must reach over or around an obstacle → an articulated boom lift will save you time, repositioning, and frustration.

Still unsure? Tell us the working height you need, the horizontal distance to the work, and what's in the way. We'll recommend the right machine — telescopic or articulated — and won't upsell you into a bigger unit than the job requires. See our guide to choosing a boom lift size for the next step.

Does It Cost More to Rent One Type Over the Other?

Rental rates are driven mainly by working height and rental duration rather than by boom type alone. A 26m articulated unit costs more than a 16m telescopic simply because it's a larger machine, not because it bends. The real cost difference comes from renting the wrong machine: an under-reaching or wrongly-configured boom means lost days and a second mobilisation. Getting the type right the first time is what keeps the job on budget. See our rental prices guide for how pricing works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between a telescopic and an articulated boom lift?

A telescopic boom lift has a single straight boom that extends in a line, giving maximum horizontal outreach and height — ideal for open sites. An articulated boom lift has jointed (knuckle) sections that bend, letting the platform reach up and over obstacles to work around walls, structures, and machinery.

Which boom lift has more reach, telescopic or articulated?

For the same machine class, telescopic boom lifts generally offer greater horizontal outreach and can reach the maximum working height in a straight line. Articulated booms trade some straight-line outreach for the ability to bend around obstacles and position the platform precisely.

When should I choose an articulated boom lift?

Choose an articulated boom lift when you need to reach up and over an obstacle — for example working over a wall, around a building facade, above parked vehicles, or into a structure where a straight boom cannot fit. The knuckle joint gives the up-and-over access a telescopic boom cannot.

Do you stock both telescopic and articulated boom lifts in Dubai?

Yes. We rent both types from 16m to 26m across Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman. Our 16m and 22m units are telescopic, and our 20m and 26m units are articulated, so we can match the machine to your access needs. Call +971 55 692 9829 to discuss your site.

Not Sure Which Boom Lift You Need?

Tell us your working height, the horizontal reach to the work, and what's in the way. We'll recommend the right telescopic or articulated machine — 16m to 26m — and deliver across Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman.
